Blog #4 - Coding for Kids

Using Scratch to Investigate Refraction!

Scratch coding is an excellent application to incorporate into your teaching plans. Scratch fosters engagement, creativity and problem-solving skills among students. It introduces them to computational thinking, laying the foundation for computer science concepts. Scratch projects can span across subjects, enabling cross-disciplinary learning. Its accessibility and user-friendly interface make it suitable for all ages. I have created a lesson relating to the Grade 4 science unit Light and Shadows, where students use Scratch to explore how refraction works involving the bending and dispersion of light.

  1. Hello Kya,
I really enjoyed your lesson plan on optics and refraction. The scratch game is a great way to create a visual display to teach refraction. Your lesson plan was well thought out and descriptive. The pencil in the glass of water experiment is a great ready to learn activity. I wonder if you could do the scratch refraction activity as the ready to learn activity, and the pencil experiment as the development of learning. Overall, great job !
